Flavored spirits, RTD products take over traditional liquor categories

DBR Staff Writer Published 02 August 2012

Flavored spirits and ready-to-drink (RTD) products are the fastest growing segments due to significant consumer demand for such products, according to the industry.

Liquor stores now feature more flavored beverages, particularly in alternative packaging, including foil pouches and unbreakable plastic bottles.

Byron's Liquor Warehouse operations manager Jon Perieda told newsok.com that products like Buzz Ballz - premixed cocktails packaged in round, plastic containers that float - and freezer-ready pouches of margaritas and daiquiris are new products proving popular with customers.

Vodkas are now available in cake, cookie dough, mango, whipped cream and other flavors, while traditional whiskey is being replaced by new flavors and packaging.

Liquor wholesaler Jarboe Sales co-owner JB Jarboe told the website that there are now 10,000 alcoholic products available to wholesalers.

In addition to bourbon, gin, tequila and whiskey offerings in the flavored category, female consumers are also contributing to the trend.
